There is good news for activists fighting to save the dwindling population of tigers in India. A sample survey in Kaziranga National Park in Assam, which is being carried out by the conservation group Aaranyak under the aegis of the Assam Forest and Wildlife Department, has indicated that a sizeable tiger population has survived in the sprawling wildlife sanctuary.The recent deaths of ten tigers in Kaziranga had alarmed the authorities.

The Centre on Monday earmarked a separate Rs 2,217 crore for 42 urban centres to tackle air pollution and announced the much-awaited voluntary vehicle scrapping policy to phase out old and polluting vehicles, even as it shrunk the budgetary allocation for the environment ministry from the last fiscal by nearly eight percent. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her budget speech for 2021-22, announced a total of Rs 2869.93 crore for the ministry, Rs 230 crore less than the last fiscal. Officials said the outlay has been lesser this time as the economy is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A team of forest officials were informed by local villagers that a tiger was seriously injured in a trap laid by poachers. The tiger later died from its injuries. The tiger population is decreasing at an alarming rate in the Valmiki National Park, Bihar's only tiger project.

The tiger that strayed out of the forests of Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit on Monday night was on Tuesday declared a man-eater. The decision followed the failure of wildlife officials to tranquilise the tiger that mauled a 14-year-old boy in Serai-Belari village in Barabanki district, about 40 km from Lucknow on Monday night.
